“And I’ll cross oceans like never before…”

Show this is my first official tumblr posting and I thought I would be super if I included a first song of the week with the other postings that I’ll be doing.

Jasmine Van den Bogaerde, also known by her stage Birdy is quickly becoming one of my favorite artists. Her cover of the Bon Iver song “Skinny Love” made my heart sink as my eyes swelled with tears and it’s the same for this song. “Shelter” is another cover but this time by the indie rock/indie pop group The XX. In my opinion it’s even better than theirs, but I think it’s the emotional level and power behind Birdy that helps those who listen to it experience it the way words would be spoken if they were read as a poem. And it doesn’t help that Birdy version of the song was also featured on The Vampire Diaries episode “The Sun Also Rises”, which aired May 5 (2011) and the XX version was featured in movie “I Am Number Four”. The scenes from both pictures that showed the versions of the song were portrayed it them perfectly and I can only image them different if it was the scene in my life that the song take me back too.

Anyways, it’s weird how someone so young (she just turned fifteen) can sing words that are so beautiful and yet painful because you yourself have experienced the same emotions and thoughts. I think even if Birdy’s own written words are even as half as great as the heart-rending and power of her voice then Adele may have a rival in this young Brit.
